The European Programme of Carbon Footprint

How to communicate the quantification and reduction of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions of products and organizations.
The program
Carbon Footprint Europe

CFE History

Carbon Footprint Europe (CFE) represents the 2026 evolution of Carbon Footprint Italy (CFI) towards a European scale.

2018
CFI established

Established in 2018, CFI is the first and only Italian Programme Operator for communicating the quantification and reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from products and organizations, operating through a registry and the issuance of labels to companies.

2021
Carbon Footprint International Alliance is established

In 2021, CFI spearheaded the creation of the Carbon Footprint International Alliance together with other Programme Operators, with the aim of establishing a collaborative network based on mutual recognition and consistency of action.

2022
Launch of meetings with companies registered

In 2022, Carbon Footprint Italy launched meetings with registered companies to increase engagement and consult them on potential improvements to the Program.

2024
The Mutual Recognization Agreement (MRA) with IPEF

In 2024, CFI entered into a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with IPEF, the South Korean program operator, providing for the mutual and immediate recognition of issued labels in both countries.

2026
CFI evolves in CFE

2026 marks a turning point. Following the evolution of regulations regarding environmental communication—including the communication of commitments to carbon management—and feedback received from stakeholders, CFI is transforming into Carbon Footprint Europe.

CFE values

Credibility: Entities wishing to register with Carbon Footprint Europe must provide two guarantees: quantifying GHG emissions, or their reduction, using internationally recognized standards (ISO), and subjecting them to verification by independent third parties accredited by the national accreditation body. The credibility of CFE labels stems from this methodological rigor and third-party oversight.
Transparency: CFE marks link directly to public, freely accessible registration records. Anyone can view GHG emissions and/or reductions for products or organizations, along with the verification opinion issued by the independent body. This transparency fosters trust among customers and stakeholders and protects against accusations of greenwashing.
Sharing: Registering with the CFE opens up the possibility of joining a network of companies that share a common path toward transparency and credibility in GHG emissions reporting.
Recognisability: The CFE mark distinguishes the product or organisation in the marketplace from competing products and companies, communicating a commitment to a serious approach to carbon management and the climate transition.

Labels

Each registration grants a specific label that can be used to communicate the GHG emissions, or emission reductions, of organizations or products.
To learn about the rules for using the labels, you can download the “Label Usage Regulations” from the Documents section.

CFE offers three different types of marks:

1. Product Carbon Footprint:
2. Organization Carbon Footprint:
3. Carbon Reduction:

Although carbon footprint verification does not mandate ongoing maintenance activities, the specific CFE registration is valid for three years.

Advantages to have a registration in CFE

A company that registers its product and/or organization with Carbon Footprint Europe gains access to a tool for communicating its carbon management activities, one that ensures the credibility and robustness of the information provided.

In a market increasingly focused on climate change impacts, CFE registration enables companies to respond quickly and accurately to customer inquiries, particularly from large corporate groups subject to indirect emission reporting obligations.

Furthermore, the registration profile, which includes details regarding the verification of emission quantification and reductions, conveys the reliability and consistency of the shared data.

By registering with CFE, a company joins a network of responsible businesses, offering opportunities to exchange experiences and share best practices during the many meetings organized by CFE.

Additionally, CFE’s participation in the Carbon Footprint International Alliance opens up the possibility for its labels to be recognized by other programs and markets worldwide.

Finally, because CFE labels require a verification opinion issued by an accredited, independent third party, they align with anti-greenwashing regulations (Directive 2024/825)
